Eco-compliance Digest

Today, on June 6, the Russians terrorized Ukrainians again and caused a large-scale environmental disaster by blowing up the Kakhovska hydroelectric power plant. Hundreds of square kilometers have been flooded, and thousands of people, flora, and fauna have suffered - the consequences of the dam's destruction are long and will be felt for decades to come. In particular, one of the results of the explosion will be the loss of more than 20,000 hectares of agricultural land, where Ukrainian vegetable production was concentrated for many years.

These days, we plan to return to our traditional issues of the UNIC Business Integrity Digest, in which the authors share their practical experience of implementing compliance in companies. Coincidentally, the next issue of the Digest is dedicated to environmental compliance.

The issue of ecology during the war is especially important given that Ukraine is an agrarian country that has always developed its economy thanks to its rich natural resources and work on its own land, and our well-being directly depends on this.

  • The challenges we face due to the hostilities include damaged landscapes, soil cover, mined fields, and forest parks, emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere due to daily shelling and fires, the use of gasoline generators during blackouts, and the destruction of Ukrainian flora and fauna - all of which cause serious damage with long-term consequences for the environment and human health. Therefore, it is time to pay special attention to the environment and support it where Ukrainian business can.
  •  We realize that we still must comprehend and overcome all the consequences of the war's environmental impact. Still, we hope this digest will help businesses with environmental compliance issues.

In this issue, we have covered this topic in agribusiness on the example of the UNIC member Kernel Agro Holding. The document is available at https://bit.ly/3Ncv52q.

We thank everyone who worked on this Digest.
