In November – December 2018, UNIC conducted the research “Corruption Risks in the Government Work: Business Point of View” within the framework of the project "Strengthening the Principles of Integrity in the Interaction between the State and Business" with the support of UNDP in Ukraine and the Kingdom of Denmark.

The research included a survey and an interview with the participation of Ukrainian business that aim of which was to:

  • investigate the role of corruption in constraining business activity in Ukraine;
  • measure the prevalence of corruption and main types of corruption practices in statebusiness interactions;
  • detect corruption risk factors and develop suggestions for their minimization.

Key results of the research include the following:

  • According to the respondents, the prevalence of corruption in Ukraine is high: 82% consider that corruption in Ukraine is at least somewhat widespread, while 61% of respondents consider that corruption is widespread.
  • As for corrupt behavior in private sector, most often, due to the respondents, businesses turn to bribing the employees of their counterparties or competitors.
  • The majority of the respondents (56%) think that it is possible to do business legally in Ukraine. Only 8% of respondents reject such a possibility completely.
  • 60% of respondents claimed, that personally they never turn to influential people for trouble-free business, while 32% said, that they do so only in extreme cases.
  • More than 80% of the respondents said that personally for them the statement "I refrain from giving bribes" is fair in the majority of cases (mostly – absolutely fair). 75% do not give bribes as a principle.
