Open-source intelligence (OSINT) has long since expanded beyond the realm of intelligence agencies and journalistic investigations.

Today, it is one of the key tools of corporate security, allowing organizations to identify hidden risks where others are operating “blindly.”

In a business environment where a single information leak can ruin a company’s reputation and sanctions monitoring has become a daily challenge, OSINT is becoming a core competency.

The Internet Is Multi-Layered

When we talk about open sources, we’re not just referring to Google Search. The Internet has several “layers,” and each one offers different opportunities for data collection. The surface web is what’s accessible to the average user. But it covers only a portion of the information, and search engines organize results differently. For example, Bing indexes North American websites better, while Baidu provides access to the Chinese segment.

The deep web consists of government and specialized registries that require specific procedures: payment, login with a key, or identification. This is where data on companies, property, and court cases is stored. The dark web is a separate realm where leaked databases, sensitive materials, and traces of illegal activity circulate. For OSINT, it is not interesting in and of itself, but rather as a source of early warning signs of threats.

- The surface web is everything accessible through standard search engines. An important nuance: Google, Bing, Yandex, and Baidu yield different results, and a professional investigation is never limited to a single tool.
- The deep web consists of government and specialized registries that require additional steps (payment, identification). This is where data on business owners, assets, and court cases is hidden.
- The dark web is a space where sensitive information circulates: leaked databases, illegal transactions, and anonymous communities. For corporate intelligence, it’s a way to identify threats at an early stage.

Digital “Breadcrumbs”

In the digital world, there are no small details. People rarely change their usernames, email addresses, or even phone numbers. These are the “breadcrumbs” that allow us to trace a person’s path across different platforms and over time.

It is precisely the analysis of these small details that reveals unexpected connections: hidden affiliations between companies, participation in joint projects, and relationships with politically sensitive individuals. Add social media analysis to the mix—and you have a tool that allows you to paint an almost complete portrait: lifestyle, circle of contacts, and even level of influence within a community.

Corporate Registries as a Map of Trust

Ukraine is currently one of the most transparent jurisdictions. Government registries of legal entities, court decisions, public procurement, as well as cadastral and stock databases, create nearly unprecedented opportunities for business due diligence. But the situation isn’t the same everywhere. In Cyprus, a third-party user will see only minimal information; in Switzerland, only directors are listed; whereas Bulgaria offers expanded access, including historical data.

An investigator working with OSINT must not only know how to “press the right button” but also understand the logic of each jurisdiction. This requires experience, time, and, most importantly, a systematic approach.

Sanctions: A Matter of Speed

One specific area of work with open-source intelligence is sanctions monitoring. Delays in vetting a counterparty can lead to lost contracts and reputational damage. OSINT allows you not only to check whether a company or individual is on OFAC or EU lists, but also to identify indirect connections. And it is precisely these connections that often pose the greatest risk.

Why Businesses Cannot Ignore OSINT

The value of OSINT lies in its ability to make the invisible visible. It allows you to detect fraud in public procurement even before a contract is signed. It helps you understand who is behind a company with an offshore address. It reveals how a company’s ownership structure has changed and whether individuals with a questionable reputation have joined the ranks.

All of this fosters an environment of trust. And without trust, there can be neither investment nor growth.

OSINT is a way of thinking that requires attention to detail, discipline in research, and continuous improvement of skills. And that is precisely why companies that invest in these competencies gain not only a security tool but also a real competitive advantage.
